3M Defective Ear Plug Lawsuit
Known by our nation’s military servicemen, women, and veterans as the 3M dual-ended Combat ArmsTM earplug, a popular earplug manufactured by 3M and issued to our military service members is known to be defective and has caused hearing damage among many users.
3M’s defective dual-ended Combat ArmsTM earplugs were unique in that they were designed to be worn in two directions. Worn one way, the earplugs would block out all sound – worn the other way, they would block out louder sounds such as gunfire, aircraft, and heavy artillery, but the user could still hear certain, softer sounds.
Unfortunately, the earplugs are defective, though its intended function was to provide the user with an effective means to negate the ill effects on the user’s auditory system associated with loud noise, those very same effects which were sought to be prevented occurred. Many military servicemen and women who served between 2002 and 2015 have experienced hearing problems as a result of them, including:
- Hearing loss
- Loss of balance
- Other ear/hearing problems
What Is Tinnitus?
Tinnitus is the symptomatic occurrence in which someone hears buzzing, ringing, roaring, clicking or humming in the ears, despite there being no external sound present. One common cause of tinnitus is an ear injury due to a loud external noise, the very same experienced during military service and or combat.
The constant perception of sound as conditioned by tinnitus can cause physical and psychological complications. Many sufferers of tinnitus develop anxiety, depression, difficulty concentrating, memory complications, sleep related issues, and many report having suicidal thoughts.
Tinnitus is the number one disability claimed by military veterans.
Is 3M Company Responsible For Hearing Damage?
Lawsuits have already been filed against the 3M company for failing to warn users of the earplug defects and for failing to provide proper instructions for their use. Their negligence has resulted in a variety of hearing problems among servicemen and women, including hearing loss, tinnitus, and loss of balance.
